Updated: Feb 10, 2020

Hi there, welcome to DROP's first Road Report. This is a guide to the roads of Penang. We want to provide you with information about what's happening (food, traffic and parking) along the streets of Penang.

Also, we are giving you a heads up with MBPP, JPJ and Police behaviour at those streets. 👮🏼‍♂️🚓🚗

Intro to Beach Street

One of the oldest streets in George Town, Penang. It was built not long after Captain Francis Light founded Penang in 1786.

Nowadays, Beach Street is filled with old shophouses at one end, and banks and government offices on the other. The banking part of Beach Street is part of Penang's Central Business District with banks such as Standard Charted, HSBC, OCBC and Bank of China.

Government offices such as Penang Immigration Department, Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Pulau Pinang, Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Pulau Pinang, Ministry Of Tourism and Culture Penang and more.

Good Food along Beach Street

There's a ton of good food at Beach Street, catering to everyone from tourists to office workers all throughout the street.

Ali Nasi Lemak Daun Pisang

Famous on Beach Street, Ali Nasi Lemak is a cheap and delicious Nasi Lemak Stall right in front of Sri Weld Food Court. You can always find a queue lining to buy packets of Nasi Lemak. 🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏼‍♂️🚶🏼‍♀️

They only sell simple packets of Nasi Lemak, there's no need for any fancy gimmick. It comes in 5 flavours.

Gao Enough Tea

Unlike a lot of bubble tea joints popping up all over Penang, Gao Enough Tea is native Penang bubble tea joint. Their drinks come in a transparent bottle that looks like vintage soda cans. (I liked the can so much that I kept it 🌚)

Their milk tea is unique, there's a nice combination of saltiness and sweetness which they affectionately refer to as Humsup Milk Tea.

No, traffic jams are not a big issue along Beach Street. However, at the intersection at traffic lights between Jalan Dr Lim Chong Eu and Beach Street is often congested during peak hours.

Every Sunday from 7 AM to 1 PM Penang Car-Free Day, Beach Street is traffic-free for six hours. Lots of events happening. Dogs for adoptions, food vendors everywhere, performances of all kinds.

Parking Situation

Beach Street can be divided into two parts. The central business district and the shophouses area. Each with their unique parking situations.

You can find parking alongside the roads of the business district, which requires parking coupons or the smart parking app.

Parking around this area can only be found along the side of the road.

Warning!!! Parking Punishment Hot Zone

JPJ and Traffic Police often check for any traffic violations along Beach Street. Be careful, a few minutes at the bank or trying to buy some eats will result in you being clamped or towed.

Remember to use your parking coupons or pay with the Smart Parking App. If you don't pay, you'll be fined between RM30 to RM50.
